Driving Naari Programme launched in Chandigarh
On Monday, several parts of India witnessed heavy rainfall. In Uttarakhand, five people died in rain-related incidents. Since the weekend, 27 people have lost their lives in Kerala as a result of landslides and floods triggered by heavy rainfall.
Other states including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana also saw heavy rains on Monday.
Here are the top points from affected states.
UTTARAKHAND
In Uttarakhand, five people – including three workers from Nepal died in rain-related incidents on Monday. Another two people were injured.
The workers from Nepal were in a tent at Samkhal near Lansdowne in Pauri district when rubble from a field flowed towards their lodging due to the rain and buried them alive. District Magistrate Vijay Kumar Jogdande said the two injured people have been admitted to the Kotdwar base hospital.
In Selkhola in Champawat district, two people died after their house collapsed following a landslide.
The state authorities have advised Chardham pilgrims, who arrived in Haridwar and Rishikesh this weekend, not to proceed to the Himalayan temples till weather conditions improve.
In Rishikesh, passenger vehicles are not being allowed to cross the Chandrabhaga bridge, Tapovan, Lakshman Jhoola and Muni-ki-Reti Bhadrakali barriers.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the state’s disaster control room in Dehradun to take stock of the situation.
KERALA
The death toll in incidents related to heavy rains, including landslides and flash floods in Kerala rose to 27 on Monday. Meanwhile, a red alert has been issued for 11 dams across Kerala as water levels have breached the danger mark in several areas.
Additionally, state revenue minister K Rajan said that two shutters of Kakki dam in Pathanamthitta have been opened and pilgrimage to Lord Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala has been put on hold for now.
Heavy rains are again expected in the state between October 20 and 24.
DELHI
Heavy rains lashed Delhi on Monday, leading to traffic snarls and waterlogging at several places in the city. The minimum temperature was 23.9 degrees Celsius.
Delhi recorded 87.9 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am on Sunday and 8.30 am on Monday. This year, 94.6 mm of rainfall has already been recorded in October in Delhi.

The month of October this year has been the wettest in Delhi since 1960, when the city recorded 93.4 mm of rainfall, according to data shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
HIMACHAL PRADESH
As a result of flash floods triggered by heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district, a link road from National Highway-05 to Moorang was blocked.
MADHYA PRADESH
Almost all parts of Madhya Pradesh received post-monsoon showers on Monday.
More rains are likely over the next couple of days in the state, P K Saha, senior meteorologist at the Indian Meteorological Department’s Bhopal office, was quoted in a PTI report.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan postponed his campaign visit to Khandwa due to the weather. The overnight rains had resulted in slush at the venue where the chief minister was supposed to address public meetings.
WEST BENGAL
A low pressure system caused continuous rains with a couple of spells of heavy downpour in parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata.
The meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall in all districts of south Bengal.
ODISHA
With the formation of a low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha is bracing itself for heavy rain.
Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture into deep sea off the Odisha coast till Tuesday high wind speeds are likely over Bay of Bengal.
An orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts till 8.30 am on Tuesday has been issued.
UTTAR PRADESH
Districts like Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Baghpat and Meerut have received heavy rainfall since Sunday morning.
This led to waterlogging and electricity supply disruption in several parts of these districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s rally in Budhana town was cancelled as the venue was submerged in rainwater.
RAJASTHAN
Rajasthan also witnessed light to moderate rainfall at many places, while isolated areas received heavy rain on Monday.
