Punjab school board has no funds for salaries, pension

MOHALI: Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) is facing acute financial crises as it has no funds left to pay salaries and pensions of the employee. Salaries for the month of June have still not been transferred into the accounts of the employees.
There are around1,100staff members and 1,600 pensioners with the board. Chairman Yograj Sharma said, “We have taken up the matter with the state government and hopefully it will be sorted out soon.”
Major factors that have dragged the PSEB in this mess are either earnings eaten up by various scams or the board awaiting debt clearance from the Punjab government.
The state has not paid Rs 427 crore for books and fee of Scheduled Caste students. Even, DPI (secondary) has not paid the rent to the tune of Rs 20 crore to PSEB. the board is to recover Rs 427 crore from the two department of the state government against text books supplied for free distribution to the children.
The total expenditure of the PSEB per month is approximately Rs 15 crore and if DPI office clears its debts, the board will be able to pay salaries, said Parvinder Singh, president of PSEB employees union.
The employees union says that bad debt recoveries can serve a major contribution in salaries. The government owe around rs 427 crore to the education board in the form of textbook payments or pending rent of the building being used by various government departments.
In all, the departments owe approximately Rs 20 crore to the board as rent.
