After ETT, BEd teachers take to streets in Patiala

Patiala

A couple of days after aspiring teachers who have cleared ETT and TET protested here, those who have passed B Ed staged a dharna on Wednesday, demanding that more posts of school teacher be created.

They were marching towards Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s residence, when the police blocked their way at YPS roundabout. At one point of the time, the two sides came close to pushing each other but the police were able to keep the situation under control.

The protesters then staged a sit-in at the roundabout and raised slogans against Capt Amarinder for refusing to meet them. The aspiring teachers have been protesting for six months.

Before marching towards the CM’s residence, the protesters gathered at Baradari Gardens. Addressing aspiring teachers, Sukhwinder Singh, president, TET Pass Unemployed B Ed Teachers’ Union, said: “Why did the government advertise only 2,182 posts when the number of unemployed B Ed teachers is more than 50,000?”

The protesters also demanded that the upper age limit for being appointed a teacher should be fixed at 42. At present, the upper age limit is 37 years.

The protester lifted the dharna after the district administration assured them of a meeting among two union leaders, ETT-TET pass teachers and Chief Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar.

The meeting has been schedule for March 12.
