Ex-DIG Kultar Singh, 4 others get 8-year jail in Amritsar mass suicide case

Additional Sessions Judge Sandeep Singh Bajwa on Wednesday sent former Punjab DIG Kultar Singh and four others to eight-year imprisonment in a mass suicide case here in 2004.

They were recently convicted in the case along with DSP Hardev Singh, who got four-year jail. The four other convicted are the relatives of the deceased’s family.

Kultar was slapped a fine of Rs 23,000 and the DSP that of Rs 20,000. The four family members were told to pay Rs 23,000 each in fine.

Hardeep Singh, wife Romi, their children Ishmeet and Sanmeet and Hardeep’s mother Jaswant Kaur had committed suicide by consuming poison on the intervening night of October 30 and 31, 2004.

Before ending their lives they had scribbled their plight on the walls of their house while accusing their relatives and the then SSP Kultar Singh of extortion and criminal intimidation that forced them to take the extreme step.

The four relatives who were convicted are Sabreen, Mohinder Singh, sister Parminder Kaur and her husband Palwinderpal Singh.

Kultar was convicted of abetting suicide, extortion, criminal conspiracy and forgery. The four relatives were convicted of abetting suicide, extortion and criminal intimidation. Hardev was held guilty of criminal conspiracy, disappearance of evidence and forging documents.
