No respite yet, cold wave to continue for next 72 hrs

Ludhiana, December 27

There will be no respite from the persisting cold wave conditions for the next 72 hours. The weathermen have predicted that similar conditions will prevail in the region and days are expected to open up only after December 30.

The chill in the air and low visibility due to fog continue to pose difficulties for people in the region, throwing normal life out of gear.

As per the Met Department, Chandigarh, the weather situation will remain the same for three-four days. In Punjab, Amritsar witnessed the lowest temperature at 8.4 degrees Celsius (maximum temperature). In Chandigarh, the maximum temperature recorded in last 24 hours was 8.8 degrees Celsius, forcing most of the people to remain indoors.

Surinder Paul, Director, Met Department, said the cold wave would persist across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh and visibility would remain affected due to foggy conditions. The thick cover of smog was witnessed all over the periphery till 10 am in the morning. Officials at the PAU believe that due to harsh and unexpected weather conditions, people would be inconvenienced.

“There is a ray of hope that after a couple of days when we may get respite from severe weather conditions. Since December 18, there is no sunlight and it is cloudy and foggy all over. People have been advised to remain indoors as much as possible, especially the elderly and children,” said Dr KK Gill, an agrometeorologist at PAU.
