US, UK, Canada, France issue travel advisories for Northeast

Chandigarh-The US, the UK, Canada, France and Israel have issued travel advisories for travel to the northeast following protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). The countries have advised their citizens to avoid travel to the region or to exercise caution. In an advisory posted on a website, the US asked its citizens in the northeastern states to exercise caution in light of media reports of protests and violence in response to the approval of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. It wrote: “Government curfews are in place in some areas. Internet and mobile communications may be disrupted. Transport also affected in various parts of the region. Protests have also been reported in other parts of the country. The US government has temporarily suspended official travel to Assam.” The UK, France and Israel have also issued a travel advisory for tourists travelling to India amid outrage over CAA. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed on Thursday, as per the Act, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, and facing religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants, but given Indian citizenship. After the Bill was cleared, violent protests broke out across the state with agitators engaging in pitched battles with the police, forcing the administration to impose curfew in several places and three people lost their lives.
