Hyderabad gangrape-murder accused to be tried in Mahabubnagar fast-track court

The four accused in the Hyderabad gangrape and murder by burning will be tried in a fast-track court and the verdict is expected to be delivered in record time.

The Telangana government issued a notification yesterday that was accorded a go-ahead by the Telangana High Court today.

A Special Court would be set up The Court of the Additional District and Session Judge at Mahabubnagar for the speedy trial of the rape and murder of Disha (name changed) in Cr No 784/2019 of Shadnagar police station, reads the G.O no 639 of December 3, 2019. The Telangana High Court gave its approval sent to it by the Law Secretary.
Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao has already directed the officials to initiate the process for setting up the court to ensure expeditious trial and stringent punishment to the guilty. A similar fast track court was set up in Warrangal district where the trial in a similar matter was disposed of in a conviction for the accused in a record 56 days.

A veterinarian, who has been given the hashtag #Disha for use in social media and to protect her identity, was gangraped and burnt to death by four persons, all in their twenties, near Outer Ring Road at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad on the night of November 27.
All four were arrested on November 29 and two were found to be truck drivers and the other two truck cleaners. Police revealed that they had conspired to trap the victim by deflating the tyre of her two-wheeler and later taking her to an isolated place on the pretext of helping her. Even the local police did not respond to her sister’s pleas to help her citing jurisdictional an issue. Three policemen have since been suspended.

Meanwhile, Telangana Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali held a review meeting to discuss steps to be taken to prevent crime against women in the state. Three Ministers and senior police officials, including Director-General of Police M Mahendar Reddy, were present.

Principal Secretary (Home) Ravi Gupta, Additional Director-General of Police Jitender, Cyberabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat and Warangal Police Commissioner V. Ravindra and other officials gave their suggestions and explained the measures that were being put in place for the safety of women.

Hyderabad was selected as one of the cities under the Safe City Project of the central government. The offered to give Rs 100 crore from the Nirbhayia Scheme and another Rs 270 crore was earmarked under the Safe City Project, but the money was never released because Telangana failed to release the 40 per cent share it had to pool towards the project.
