Bhattal meets Sonia on PPCCissue

New Delhi,  Former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal today met Congress president Sonia Gandhi to discuss the ongoing crisis in the Punjab Congress and immediate resolution of the matter. The central leadership is likely to name a central observer to deal with the issue.
Speaking to The Tribune, Bhattal said she had requested the Congress president to appoint a committee of senior central leaders to discuss with the top brass of the state Congress on what needs to be done to resolve the leadership issue.
Congress sources said Bhattal spoke to Sonia on the urgency to discipline the warring factions led by Capt Amarinder Singh and PPCC chief Partap Bajwa. The sources said she also spoke of the need to review Bajwa and Congress Legislature Party Leader Sunil Jakhar’s roles. “There’s a feeling in a section of the leadership that if one goes, the other must go too,” said an AICC source.
The party has adopted a wait and watch policy. It is learnt that a central observer may be asked to speak with the Amarinder and Bajwa factions to find a way out.
The Congress general secretary in charge of party president’s office, Ambika Soni, is learnt to have been informally asked to communicate on the matter.
“The matter needs deft handling. The central leadership can’t be seen to be acting under pressure,” said Bhattal. For an objective view, the high command needed to talk to all state leaders, she said.
A section of Congress leaders say while Amarinder Singh is the tallest leader in the state Congress, he has had his chances as PPCC president.
