Fasting for Sikh detainees, Khalsa ends stir

Ambala,

The campaign launched by Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa to secure the release of seven Sikh prisoners languishing in jails, despite having completed their sentence today came to an abrupt end.The Sikh activist broke his indefinite fast at the Ambala Civil Hospital this evening. He was shifted to the hospital on January 10 after his health deteriorated.Sources said a team of doctors had written to the district administration that while Khalsa’s vital signs were stable, he needed to be given total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and should be shifted to the PGI at Chandigarh or Rohtak. Doctors said his blood and urine samples had shown traces of ketone, released by the body in the absence of proper nutrition. They said his blood pressure and sugar were normal. Khalsa lost 20 kg during his 62-day fast.Persuaded by members of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and his family members, Khalsa ended his fast at 7.30 pm. He accepted a glass of juice from his son Jhujhar Singh. He was brought out of the hospital on a wheelchair and taken away to Thaska Ali, his native village, in Kurukshetra district. In a brief conversation with mediapersons outside the trauma care unit, Khalsa said various Sikh bodies, including the DSGMC and the Sant Samaj, had pleaded with him to end his protest. He claimed there was no pressure on him from the authorities to end the fast.
