22 booked for riot in Ludhiana jail

One of the inmates escaped during rioting at the Ludhiana jail on Thursday. Undertrial Aman Kumar, alias Deepak, booked for theft under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC by the Khanna police, was a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh.

Prisoner Ajit Baba was killed and 11 persons — five inmates and six policemen — were injured in the violence. Baba succumbed to a bullet injury. The police have booked 22 inmates for allegedly attacking police personnel and damaging property. Jail Superintendent Shamsher Singh had told the media yesterday that the violence had erupted after the death of inmate Sunny Sood at Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. Citing doctors’ report, he had said Sunny had consumed poison. However, in his police complaint today, he claimed the trouble began after two groups of gangsters picked a quarrel and officials on duty tried to intervene but were attacked with bricks.
