Governor calls for united fight against drugs

Chandigarh

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore has given a clarion call to educational institutions, NGOs, voluntary organisations and public to work on a common platform for ensuring a drug-free and “tandurust” state.

On the eve of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Governor said the state had taken up the mission under the Drug-Free India campaign, which was reportedly the largest of its kind, under which as many as 30,000 students took a pledge to stay away from substance abuse with the slogan, “Drugs na karunga na karne dunga”.

He said he had presided over seminars in various districts of the state, where the local police along with the students of universities and colleges expressed their desire to assist the government in generating awareness among the youth against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The Governor also called upon the political parties, irrespective of their affiliations, to jointly come on a common platform and effectively take up the task to wipe out drugs from our society. “Each and every person has got to shoulder the responsibility.”

PEP concerned over deaths

Punjab Ekta Party (PEP) chief Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Tuesday raised alarm over rising deaths of youths due to overdose, contrary to claims by the CM that the drug mafia had been wiped out. Khaira, in a statement, demanded an all-party meeting to take stock of the situation. He said it was a serious matter and Capt Amarinder was answerable to people of Punjab for “telling lies” on the drug issue.
