The deaths of two ‘chitta’ addict brothers in Khanauri town seem to have exposed the easy availability of the drug in the area.
The elder, 21-year-old, died last year, while the younger, 17-year-old, died on June 18, but the family has not got their post-mortem done, nor made any police complaint. The SSP, Sangrur, said the matter would be investigated.
While sharing details, labourer Gurdeep Singh disclosed that his elder son Kulwinder Singh died last year due to ‘chitta’ consumption, while his younger son Ramandeep Singh also died due to the addiction of the same drug last week.
“Though we tried to save Raman by keeping strict vigilance over his activities, but I could not sit at home round the clock. When I went outside for work, he took his dose. I had total four children — three sons and one daughter — and now only two are left,” said Gurdeep Singh.
He alleged that peddlers from Haryana were smuggling ‘chitta’ in the town. “There are many more youngsters addicted to chitta here,” he said.
Sangrur SSP Dr Sandeep Garg said they had not received any complaint in this connection, but said the matter would be investigated quickly.
