A 39-year-old migrant labourer, who was allegedly caught raping a 9-year-old girl at Dinesh Nagar colony in Rama Mandi, was beaten to death here on Sunday.
The accused, identified as Pappu Kumar, a native of Bihar, took the minor to his house and raped her.
Pappu lived some houses away from the victim’s family.
The Rama Mandi SHO said when the area residents heard the girl screaming they rushed to the spot only to find her in a pool of blood.
Irate residents thrashed the accused, who was in an inebriated condition.
The police which reached the spot soon found the accused seriously injured. They took him to the Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Jalandhar ACP (central) Harsimrat Singh said, “The accused took the girl when her parents were away and she was playing with her siblings.”
The victim’s parents are migrant labourers who originally belong to Jharkhand.
