Terming the role played by the Election Commission of India throughout the poll season as a “tragedy”, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the custodian itself had “miserably failed” to protect the voice of the people.
Speaking to The Tribune here today, Priyanka said the EC had been “unfair” in its dealings and decisions and had “abdicated” its responsibility. She was referring to the controversy surrounding the EC “clean chits” to PM Narendra Modi as also its “inaction” over complaints by the Congress and its decision curtailing the campaigning in West Bengal. Alleging the Constitution had been tampered with and institutions attacked, she said the BJP and its government’s view on patriotism was “constricted”.
Candid in her admission that a certain amount of arrogance had crept into the UPA-2 towards the fag end of its term, she said, “I see the same kind of arrogance, but 100 times more, in the BJP. It will be their undoing as well.”
She alleged the Modi government had failed to address the common man’s issues and was resorting to lowly discourse to hide its failures.
“The focus has to be development despite the diversionary tactics of the government and its leaders. The public must seek accountability and answers for non-performance and unfulfilled promises,” she said.
