1984 events were India’s ‘first genocide’: Naresh Gujral

Jalandhar

Terming the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in New Delhi and elsewhere as ‘India’s first genocide’, senior SAD leader and Rajya Sabha member Naresh Gujral has sought to come to the rescue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning why the then India‘CEO’ Rajiv Gandhi not to be blamed for not taking any action against the preprators of the ‘genocide’.

“Riots are when two parties attack each other. Here hapless Sikhs were pointed out attacked. So, it was a ‘genocide’ in clear terms,” blamed Gujral while talking to The Tribune.

Retaliating the Congress’ attack against PM Modi on Gujarat riots, Gujral said there was a huge difference between the 1984 anti-Sikh ‘genocide’ and the 2002 Gujarat riots. “No action was taken for three days in case of what I call India’s first genocide in 1984. Not a single shot was fired in Delhi whereas, more than 300 persons had died in police firing in Gujarat. Of the dead in Gujarat, 790 were ‘Muslims’ and 254 were ‘Hinuds rioters’ in Modi’s home state,” asserted Gujral.

He said not that the Delhi Police had remained a ‘mute spectator’ to the killing of the Sikhs, but those ‘leading the rioters’ were rewarded and protected. “Even present Punjab CM and senior Congress leader Capt Amarinder Singh had openly named Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar and HKL Bhagat. Why the Army was not called out despite such a massive rioting for first three days,” questioned Gujral, adding that the then President of India Giani Zail Singh has said his father was not heard despite him being the President.
