Toronto, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says she received no specific commitments from Prime Minister Stephen Harper at their first face-to-face meeting in more than a year.

The Conservative prime minister had last met with the Liberal premier on Dec. 5, 2013, and Wynne had embarked on a public campaign urging Harper to sit down with her.

Wynne says that while Harper made no funding commitments at Monday’s meeting, the “tangible result” was that she was able to reinforce the importance of working together.

She says now she has the ability to follow up with the prime minister, and she told him she hopes they can meet again in a couple of months.

Harper and Wynne discussed the economy, the importance of ongoing investments in infrastructure, including in the Ring of Fire, the auto sector, provincial trade barriers and the quality of First Nations’ drinking water.

Notably not on the table were pensions, over which the two have publicly clashed, and Wynne says she is moving forward anyway with a made-in-Ontario pension plan.

“He made it clear that he still doesn’t agree with our Ontario retirement pension,” Wynne said. “I knew that and that’s not a surprise. We’ve had that discussion …The understanding is that he does not agree with the direction we are going and we are continuing on that path.”
