Canadians to watch U.S. midterms unfold at viewing parties

TORONTO — People are expected to gather at viewing parties across Canada tonight to watch the American midterm elections unfold.

The U.S. Consulate General in Toronto is hosting one event, which will be attended by representatives of both Democrats Abroad and Republicans Overseas.

In the nation’s capital, the Harvard Club of Ottawa and Democrats Abroad are both set to throw viewing parties.

Democrats Abroad will also host events in eight other cities, including Vancouver, Edmonton and Montreal.

All 435 seats in the U.S. House are up for re-election, and 35 Senate seats are in play, as are almost 40 governorships and the balance of power in virtually every state legislature.

While he is not on the ballot, U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged on Monday that the 2018 midterms represent a referendum on his presidency.

The Democrats have run a super-charged campaign to end the Republicans’ hold on power in Washington.

Should they win control of the House, the Democrats could derail Trump’s legislative agenda for the next two years, along with subpoena power to investigate Trump’s personal and professional missteps.
