Jakhar flays SAD for rubbing salt into wounds of 1984 riot victims through political gimmicks

Chandigarh, November 2: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President and Lok Sabha MP Mr. Sunil Jakhar called the proposed dharna at Jantra-Mantra in New Delhi against their own Union Government on Saturday by Sukhbir Singh Badal led Shiromani Akali Dal as a mere political gimmick.

In a statement issued here, the Lok Sabha MP said that the Dharna on the issue of 1984 riots reflects political ‘political hypocrisy’ of Akali Dal as rather than withdrawing their minister from NDA Government Akalis were indulging in such tantrums to befool the masses. He said that it would be ridiculous and cruel joke with the victims if Sukhbir protests against a government as his party was one of its ally. He said that if SAD is really serious, then before sitting on dharna they must quit the NDA.

Mr. Jakhar said that if the Modi government is not taking them seriously, then they should come out of this government. He advised the President of Shiromani Akali Dal Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal that instead of doing politics on the issue SAD has to abandon the power at center and the BJP government should be pressurized to expedite the investigation in their pending span of 6 months to reach the conclusion before next general election.

Mr. Jakhar said that the Akali Dal remembers the riots issue only when any election is approaching in near future. “SAD is enjoying power for last four and half year but their government did nothing to complete the investigation in time bound manner,” he added.

Mr. Jakhar said that earlier when Mr. AB Vajpayee was the Prime Minister and SAD was also a partner in that government and SAD president himself was minister in same NDA Government, he did not take any step to investigate the riot cases up-to conclusion.

Congress President further said that from last four and half years Harsimrat Kaur Badal was Cabinet Minister in Modi Government but this government also not did anything on the issue. “On the contrary, this year, in January, the Supreme Court had constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the chairmanship of former High Court Justice S.N. Dhingra to investigate again the 186 cases that were closed earlier and to submit report in Aug 2018, but Union Government could not provide members to it and this SIT even could not start its functioning up-to July this year, which reflects the insincerity of present NDA government on such a sensitive issue,” he added.

State Congress President said that both SAD and BJP are not taking the matter seriously and both just want to issue alive for their vested political interests only otherwise their governments had enough time to investigate all the cases in time bound manner. “If still SAD and BJP people are serious on the issue then they should come up with serious efforts to reach the final conclusion in next 6 months,” he added.
