Amritsar, October 22: The President, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Mr. Sunil Jakhar has termed as most unfortunate the politics being played on the Amritsar train tragedy in which 58 people were killed and the same number were injured. The PPCC President said that the clean chit given by the railways with regard to the shocking tragedy raises numerous questions as the institution i.e. Railways conducts an inquiry even when one person gets killed. Addressing a press conference here today at the residence of the Local Government Minister Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mr. Jakhar said that the manner in which the Union Minister of State for Railways and the Chairman Railways visited the site of the tragedy and washed their hands off, gives rise to many questions.
On the occasion, Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu announced that he and his wife had decided that they would undertake full responsibility of the study and upbringing of the children of the victim families besides those people in their old age who had lost their sole bread winners.
Mr. Jakhar further stated that the disclosure made today by the driver of the train in which he has talked of applying the brakes and stone pelting on slowing down the speed, doesn’t hold any ground as it is not captured in any of the video clips. Mr. Jakhar said that the speed of the train was so fast that the whole tragedy happened in 2-3 seconds with the victims having no clue about happened and the driver claims stones were being pelted. The PPCC President also said that the railway crossing was just a few meters away from the site and the people standing on the rail tracks can be seen clearly from there. The preparations of the dussehra were started at the very site one day before, then was the GRP in thye dark or the gateman didn’t knew about this? If the permission from the police was taken then why wasn’t the railways not informed? There are many such questions waiting to be probed by the railways.
Mr. Jakhar said that the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh understanding the sensitivity of the situation didn’t indulged in blame game and instead announced assistance to the victim families and ordered a judicial inquiry to unearth the truth. The PPCC President demanded that the railways should conduct an inquiry into the tragedy and bring to the fore the truth and proceed against anybody if found guilty.
