Will Jagmeet quit Congress tomorrow?

Chandigarh, Political circles in the state as well as Delhi are abuzz with speculations whether or not former Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Jagmeet Singh Brar had parted ways with the party.
Sources said Jagmeet, who lost the race to the PPCC chief’s post to Partap Singh Bajwa, was preparing to make an important announcement related to his future political career here on January 5. They said the Congress high command was trying its best to pacify him from taking any such step till party president Sonia Gandhi and her deputy Rahul Gandhi, who were away on a private visit, returned to Delhi.
On being contacted, Jagmeet said he would not make any comment at this stage. But, he confirmed he was preparing to make a crucial announcement at a press conference he intended to address on January 5 here. “I have already expressed my views before the party high command. I can’t wait any longer for their response,” he said.
Sources said senior Congress leaders, including Ambika Soni, Harish Rawat and Rahul Gandhi’s office functionaries, had urged him to avoid any “drastic step” for a few more days. There is apprehension in the Congress top leadership that some more Malwa leaders may quit the party along with Jagmeet.
There are reports that the BJP high command has been trying to woo him into its fold since quite some time. The saffron party has been looking for some credible Sikh faces to expand its base in rural areas of Punjab to establish itself as a self-dependent political force in the state ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections.
Jagmeet said he had been in touch with his close associates in the Congress and had not taken any decision yet about his future political course. He was suspended from the Congress on August 14 last year following his statement that the party’s top leadership should take responsibility for drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections.
Brar had subsequently repeatedly denied his reported comment and had even clarified to the party that he did not target the top leadership (read Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi).
Even after his denial and clarification, Sonia Gandhi did not take any action to do away with his suspension. He has been waiting for a positive response from her ever since.
Sources said about a week ago, Brar had made it clear to the party high command, including Rahul Gandhi, that he could not wait any longer as his political career was in “suspended mode” for the past six months.
Brar’s father Gurmeet Singh was an eminent Akali leader. He ebgan his career as a leader of All-India Sikh Students Federation and because of his great oratorical skills, he soon gained popularity. He went to jail during the Emergency in the 1970s and later joined the Congress after the SAD leadership started sidelining him allegedly due to his growing influence.
