Chandigarh, June 22: Rupnagar-Phagwara 4 lane highway road project is all set to witness its construction and improvement with two different bypasses at Nawan Shahr and Banga cities as the National Highways Authority of india has floated tenders to commence work on this 88 kilometre long stretch NH-344-A.

Disclosing this here today an official spokesman said this prestigious project would ease traffic volume between Rupnagar and Phagwara, one of the busiest highways in the state, with two designed bypasses at Nawan Shahr and Banga. The SBS Nagar administration after a traffic survey had proposed to construct a bypass starting from Langroya to Mahalon village for which land was also available. He said that for the proposed Banga bypass, a report was being prepared about the requirement of land. The proposed bypasses at Nawanshahr and Banga town would provide big relief to many business establishments who were not in favour of construction of elevated roads in the two townships.

He said Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal had personally visited Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Mr Nitin Gadkari to get this project approved. The Deputy CM had proposed that the project should be built under engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode. Under the EPC mode, the contractor will maintain the highway for five years after its completion.

The spokesman said Deputy CM had described this project a ‘lifeline of Doaba region’ with focus on reducing the volume of traffic and number of accidents on the 88 KMs Rupnagar-Nawashahr-Banga-Phagwara highway stretch. He added that all the formalities have been completed and NHAI was on the brink to initiate physical work immediate after tender procedure.
