A man was arrested on Wednesday for posing as an officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate and duping a Kolkata-based contractor to the tune of Rs 48 lakh. Police said he was part of a four-man group that duped the contractor.
The accused was identified as Suman Bhowmick, who is a former civil volunteer. The Kolkata Police said the hunt was on to arrest the other three accused.
Police registered a case based on the complaint filed by the contractor. In his complaint, the contractor said he was cheated by Bhowmick and his three other associates to the tune of Rs 48 lakh.
The four accused had posed as senior officers of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate and cheated the contractor by “floating a fake tender”, police said.
“The arrested person, Suman Bhowmick, had posed as a sub-inspector (SI) attached to the tender department of the commissionerate,” police said.
“His associates also posed as officers of different ranks from SI to additional deputy commissioner of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate and cheated the complainant to the tune of Rs 48 lakh by floating fake tenders in the name of commissionerate,” police said.
Police said bank documents reflecting the entire transaction were recovered from the accused arrested in the case. Two laptops and two mobile phones were also recovered from the accused.
