37 Flights Cancelled, Many Delayed at Hyderabad Airport Due to Cyclone Michaung

Hyderabad: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad faced significant disruptions due to adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall in Chennai caused by Cyclone Michaung.

A total of 37 flights were cancelled, while many others experienced delays and diversions due to the unfavourable situation.

Officials from GMR Hyderabad International Airport expressed concerns about the escalating situation as the cyclone intensifies. The delays and diversions persisted throughout the day, affecting both departures and arrivals.

Out of the disrupted flights at RGIA, 21 departures and 16 arrivals were cancelled. As of Monday evening, there were delays in 6 departures and 12 arrivals. IndiGo airlines bore the brunt of the cancellations, with 30 flights being affected. Air India, Air Asia, and Alliance Air each had two cancellations, while SpiceJet had one cancelled flight, as per The Hindu report.

The routes primarily impacted were those between Hyderabad and Chennai. Initially, four flights faced delays and diversions on Monday morning. However, following the announcement of Chennai International Airport’s closure until 11 p.m, all flights operating between Hyderabad and Chennai were subsequently cancelled. Other affected routes included flights from Hyderabad to Tirupati, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Coimbatore, and a few flights to Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

Chennai has been grappling with heavy to extremely heavy rains, resulting in waterlogging and challenging conditions for the residents. Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall in Andhra Pradesh today, December 5, between Kavali and Machilipatnam. Though Chennai might experience some relief from the cyclone’s impact, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that heavy to very heavy rainfall will persist in the city
