3,570 Indian citizens died in 70 countries due to COVID-19: MEA

New Delhi: As many as 3,570 Indian citizens died abroad due to COVID-19 as per information provided by the Indian government’s Missions/ Posts abroad, the Ministry of External Affairs told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply on Tuesday as Parliament convened for the third day of the Monsoon Session.

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said after such requests were received by India’s diplomatic missions abroad, financial assistance for transporting the mortal remains to India or for local burial was also provided from the Indian Community Welfare Fund.
Indian citizens lost their lives due to the coronavirus in 70 countries, as per the data shared by the Ministry of External Affairs. The highest number of Indians, nearly a third, died in Saudi Arabia.

At least 41 lakh Indians lived in Saudi Arabia as of 2017 according to media reports. They form the largest expatriate group in the country and are predominant in areas like construction and services.
