BATHINDA: Two weeks after ending their year-long protest against the farm laws, as many as 22 farmer groups on Saturday formed a joint political front to contest the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab.
The political outfit has been named Sanyukt Samaj Morcha, taking after the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the umbrella body of farmers which had organized the protests.
Out of the 32 farmer groups who were part of SKM, 22 have joined hands to form the political front while three more have assured their support.

The SKM, however, clarified that it will not float its own political front, saying it was formed only for the issue of farmers.
Sources said the newly-formed front may consider joining hands with the Aam Aadmi Party at a later stage. However, the leaders have so far maintained that they will contest the elections independently.
Senior farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal was elected as the leader of the front.
Rajewal said that following the farmer agitation, the aspirations of people had grown and they urged the leaders to float a political party.
Earlier, Haryana-based farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni floated his own political party called Sanyukt Sangharsh Party.
