UT police booked Punjab Police inspector for raping 50-year-old woman

Mohali, Feb 12

Inspector Sukhdev Singh, SHO of the Phase XI police station, who was booked on charges of rape and criminal intimidation by the Chandigarh Police today, claimed that the registration of a case against the victim two years ago at the Phase 11 police station was the reason behind the development.

Stopped car as she was unwell

The victim said that she had come to Chandigarh for treatment for some ailment and was on her way back home when the incident took place.

The woman said she had stopped her car and opened its doors for some fresh air as she was feeling nauseated. It was then that the SHO allegedly overpowered and raped her in the car. The woman alleged that the cop had been following her.

Taken to GMCH-32 for examination

Police said the victim had first gone to the Sector-49 police station to report rape, from where she was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, for medical examination. Police teams were also sent to the alleged crime spot after which a team from the Sector-31 police station registered a case as the area was under their jurisdiction.

The case was registered under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Calling the allegations “totally baseless”, inspector Sukhdev Singh said he has not been contacted by the UT police to join investigations yet. “I had met the woman in 2017 in connection to a similar complaint she had lodged against a Phase-11 resident,” he said. “I have not met her since. I don’t know why she is making such allegations.”

“We have registered the case on the woman’s statement and are verifying the allegations,” said Sector-31 SHO inspector Gurjeet Kaur.
