Amritsar- Dal Khalsa has thanked Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh for offering legal aid to Sikh hijackers namely Satnam Singh and Tejinderpal Singh who had been put on fresh trail under sedition charges in a 36 years old hijacking case. However, the organization made it clear that the lawyers to fight the case had already been engaged and that the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has taken upon the responsibility to pay their fees.

Notably, the five hijackers that took the Indian plane to Lahore include Gajinder Singh, Satnam Singh, Jasbir Singh, Karan Singh and Tejinderpal Singh. They all belonged to the Dal Khalsa.

Party spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said they were grateful to DSGMC for providing the legal assistance to both. He also thanked Damdami Taksal for slamming Delhi police for filing supplementary charge-sheet and framing charges under sedition afresh. Similarly, he acknowledge the statement of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) ridiculing the (Indian) state for heaping injustice on both the Sikhs.

He said the team of lawyers under Justice (retd) R S Sodhi had been engaged to fight the case effectively and efficiently. He said the hijackers were first tried for hijacking in Pakistani court and sentenced; thereafter they were again tried for same incident by Indian Court and discharged. Now you can’t change the denomination and try for the same incident under a different offence. It is per se illegal, he opined.

He recalled that an Indian Airlines plane carrying 111 passengers and six crew members were hijacked on 29 Sep 1981 to draw the attention of the world towards the plight of Sikhs in India and sought the release of Damdami Taksal head Sant Jarnail Singh.
