SAD condemns Cong govt for “Diwali” gift of new taxes on urbanites

Chandigarh, The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today said after proving to be anti-farmer, the Congress government had now proved it was anti-urban also by imposing municipal tax as well as increasing development charges in towns and cities.

In a statement here, SAD Treasurer and spokesman N K Sharma condemned the “Diwali” gift of new charges imposed on urbanites, saying this would hit the common man and impact his finances adversely. Mr Sharma said it was unfortunate that the common man had been burdened with a municipal tax equivalent to two per cent of power bills in municipal areas besides increase in external development charges, increase in road cutting fee besides other services being provided by the municipalities.

Questioning the “development” model of Local Bodies minister Navjot Sidhu which had resulted in new taxation, the Akali spokesman asked him to explain to the people why he had not come up with a single development scheme for towns and cities in the last seven months. “If you fail in your duties as a minister and cannot deliver that does not mean you take out your frustration on the common man by burdening them with new taxes. It is better you quit if you cannot perform and go back to doing comedy shows. Serving people is an onerous responsibility which is difficult for you to understand”, he added.

Mr Sharma also asked finance minister Manpreet Badal to tell the people why he had kept the anti-urban proposals hidden during presentation of the State budget. “You presented a tax free budget simply to grab headlines but now you are taxing the people with impunity. It seems you have become a Congressman very quickly as you have adopted the age old Congress policy of lies and deceit and betrayed the trust of the urban population. You will be held accountable for this betrayal”, he added.
