Ranjit Kumar quits post of Solicitor Gen

New Delhi, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar resigned on Friday, citing personal reasons.
Kumar is the second senior law officer to have resigned after Mukul Rohatgi, who quit as Attorney General in June. He sent his resignation to Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday. Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was likely to replace him as the Solicitor General.

Both he and Rohatgi were appointed in June 2014 for a three-year term after the Narendra Modi government came to power. Their second term was renewed in June along with that of five Additional Solicitors General “until further orders”.
But barely a week later, Rohatgi on June 11 decided to discontinue as the top law officer to get back to private practice. The government then appointed senior advocate KK Venugopal as the AG. There have been speculations about Kumar being considered for elevation as a Supreme Court judge.
