Punjab launches online web portal for driving licence

  • Web based sarathi online project launched in a Fatehgarh Sahib
  • Major Initiative by transport department to bring transparency
  • Driving test centers to be established in every district

 Chandigarh, The Punjab Transport Department today took a path breaking e-Governance initiative by launching Online Version of the Web Based SARATHI application for Learner’s License and Driving License. (Sarathi on Web-SOW) at Fatehgarh Sahib. This unique web based programme would enable single point of presence for online submission of requests for learner’s license, driving license, driving school license and conduction license in the State of Punjab.

Inaugurating the service, Mr. Anurag Aggarwal, Secretary Transport in the presence of Mr. Ashwani Kumar, State Transport Commissioner said that this online service would support transparency and foster accountability for providing better services the citizens. He further said that in this online application, the applicant can fill in his form and particulars online subsequent to which the application can be submitted on the portal. Once the online application is submitted, a Unique Reference Number (URN) shall be generated. The applicant can then check the status of the application online with the help of the URN. Citizens would get better online quality of services benefit as they would be able to apply for driving/learning license. It will also enable users instant access of DL/LL information on htt://sarathi.nic.in or punjabtransport.org.

Mr. Aggarwal said that the Transport department was moving with endeavour to minimize interaction of public with the authorities so that there was no harassment to the public at the windows. He said that immediately after submission of his online application the applicant can get himself photographed in District Transport Office and after clearing Driving Test he would be issued Driving Licence.

Explaining the improvement in the conduct of Driving Test, Mr. Aggarwal said that earlier driving test was conducted on the road and very soon all big and small cities would have computerized state-of-art Driving Test Centres that would enable scientific conduct of driving test. He said that to help the applicants helpdesks would be set up in all the districts.

Giving the details of state wide roll out of this plan, Mr. Aggarwal said that online service would be launched in Patiala, Ropar, Mohali on September 8 and within 15 days all districts would be covered by online service.

He said that Transport department as a part of Governance Reforms had been taking multiple initiatives to provide e-Governance services to the citizens of Punjab. He said that as a part of this initiative, Department of Transport is also providing all services to the general public in electronic mode. He said that at present Driving Licenses/Registration Certificates are being issued in a smart card form by the Department.
