Google Doodle celebrates Rosetta’s historic comet landing

New Delhi: Google celebrates the historic landing of European Space Agency robotic probe called the ‘Philae lander’ on a comet after detaching from its mothership Rosetta with a doodle on its homepage.

The doodle features an animated version of the successful Philae comet lander along with the tagline “first controlled touchdown on comet nucleus”.

The Rosetta’s Philae lander has become the first ever spacecraft to land safely on a comet after travelling through space for more than ten years and covering a distance of nearly 4 billion miles.

It continues to study the comet it landed on and will send back the data which would shed light on the origins of our solar system.

Rosetta has set a number of records, including being the first spacecraft to orbit a comet rather than just flying past collecting images.
