Congress, BJP Failed to Expose Foreign Black Money Hoarders: Ram Jethmalani

Bhopal: Eminent criminal lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Jethmalani on Friday lashed out at Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for not making conscious efforts to expose the names of foreign black money hoarders.

Jethmalani alleged that the two parties failed to obtain list of black money hoarders from Germany, which according to him possesses a list of 1400 Swiss bank accounts, majority of which belong to Indians.

The 94-year-old lawyer and one of the founding members of BJP, was in Bhopal to attend a function at a private law university.

While interacting with the mediapersons, Jethmalani said he had moved Supreme Court for a list of Indians who had black money stashed in Switzerland.

“As the SC was about to deliver the verdict in my favour in 2011, then PM Manmohan Singh had a secret agreement with Swiss government,” said Jethlamani claiming that the understanding enabled government of India not to dig into previous Swiss accounts of Indians and won’t be seeking information under a UN agreement on corruption.

“Then PM agreed to seek information only under Double Taxation Avoidance Treaty which has nothing to do with the black money,” he claimed.

The subsequent BJP government at the Centre too did not make any effort to expose those names after coming to power in 2014.

The veteran lawyer, however, did not comment on Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh, saying he would definitely follow the matter in future.

Criticising the attack in Karachi which killed over 72 people, the senior lawyer said, “The Islam being propagated these days is not the one preached by prophet, but one of Wahabis.”

He recounted that he originally hails from Sindh in Pakistan and those days there was an absolute brotherhood among Muslims and Hindus.

In his mid nineties, Jethmalani attributed his sound health to playing badminton regularly.
