Pathankot, The district police today launched a manhunt to nab the occupants of a car that tried to enter the city after hitting an ASI at a check post at Madhopur, 5 km from here.
Madhopur town is the gateway to the neighbouring state of J&K and is located on the Pathankot-Jammu road.
The Alto car bearing a J&K registration plate tried to speed into the city around 2 am. ASI Dilbagh Singh and his team were stationed at the check post. When the ASI signalled the car to stop, its driver tried to run over him. He sustained minor injuries. Later, the five occupants of the car abandoned the vehicle and fled towards the city taking a route on which hundreds of Gujjars (shepherds) have their settlements.
Senior officers were informed following which SSP Nilambari Jagadale Vijay launched a manhunt. The search went throughout the day. Roads leading to Himachal Pradesh and J&K were sealed and a heavy police force launched a search in the Gujjar-dominated area.
Security at the Air Force station and the Ammunition depot at Mamun cantonment was tightened.
The SSP said a case had been against the five unidentified persons at the Sujanpur police station.
“There is a possibility that the accused might be cattle smugglers although the terror angle cannot be ruled out. Senior officers are investigating the matter,” said the SSP.
